We’re delighted to welcome two of western Colorado’s best acoustic musicians, David Starr and Ellen Stapenhorst to the Pink House stage. Both are seasoned performers and accomplished singer-songwriters in their own right, but they are also friends and have agreed to join forces to help us close out the 2018 season with warmth, heart and great music.

DAVID
We were lucky enough to catch a David Starr house concert last summer, and we were immediately taken with his engaging lyrics, story-telling and great melodies. David grew up in Northwest Arkansas and started playing drums at 10, then picked up guitar at 13. He has released eight albums (including the newest, The Head and Heart) and opened shows for Survivor, Clint Black, Restless Heart, The Marshall Tucker Band and The Guess Who.

David launched Starr’s Guitars in Little Rock in 1998, and then he relocated to Cedaredge, Colorado in 2001. Today, his thriving store is such an institution that in 2016 Cedaredge proclaimed his birthday as David Starr Day. David divides his time between operating his guitar store and touring internationally to attentive, appreciative audiences.

“In a perfect world, I would be playing in a room where everybody’s listening,” he says. “That’s why I like a situation like a house concert or listening room because I like to tell a story. I like to talk about the inspiration behind the song. I just like connecting and that’s what I hope to do with this new music.”
“David Starr has a voice you will never forget. His music is authentic; his songs are honest, full of emotion and truth. The Head and Heart is a showcase for his classic songwriting style and wonderful guitar playing.”– John Oates

ELLEN
We first met Ellen Stapenhorst a few years back when we went to see our friend Michael Johnson perform at Applefest in Cedaredge. He introduced us to Ellen, and we’ve been fans ever since. For over five decades, Ellen has been entertaining audiences with her uplifting, original folk music, humor and a love of bringing people together.  Her rich, clear voice (about which actor Tim Curry once exclaimed, "A DAMN fine set of pipes!"), strong guitar playing, and insightful, well-crafted songs come from and go right to the heart.

Ellen's life and musical roads have taken her from the LA coffee houses of the 60's, to Colorado and the eclectic Aspen-based country-rock band Tanglefoot in the 70's, to Nashville, Northern California and her current home on the western slope in Colorado.  She's played in castles on the Rhine, concert halls in Europe and the Caribbean, and the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver.  Ellen has shared stages with many artists, including John Denver, Buffy Ste. Marie, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John Stewart, Shawn Colvin and Frankie Valle.  She brings a joyful intimacy to venues large and small.

About her music, Ellen says “My songs are my kids, and I want them to go out into the world and do good things."

“All my life, I’ve dreamed of what humanity could be, and tonight I see it manifest in you.” -- Buckminster Fuller, after hearing Ellen perform.

As you can see we have the promise of a wonderful show with David and Ellen, so do whatever it takes to make it to this one. We’d love to see you there.
