The names Smythe & Taylor may not sound familiar to you, but we think it’s time they should!  TC Smythe and Gary Taylor have been performing together in listening rooms and at house concerts all over the world since 1999, when they both lived in Houston Texas. They continued as a duo even during the several years after Gary moved 1000 miles away to Westcliffe.  Luckily for us, TC also moved to Westcliffe this past year, and we are excited that they now both “belong” to Colorado and are returning to play for Pink House!

Well known for their humor and tight harmonies, Smythe & Taylor, both separately and as a duo, have won numerous songwriting and performing awards over the years (including the Woody Guthrie Songwriting Award 2005, the Academy of Texas Music Vocal Duo of the Year 2009 and Popular Song of the Year 2013).

Listen to Smythe & Taylor

Gary Taylor is the songwriting engine behind the duo. Since the tender age of 5, Gary has entertained audiences starting on the ukulele, piano, and most frequently, the guitar. He plays a picking style akin to Doc Watson, and cut his teeth on Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and The Beach Boys. His musical partner and vocal anchor, TC Smythe, was born on Bob Dylan's birthday, but fortunately, sounds much more like Alison Krauss. Joining the duo for our concert will be Gary's wife, Kathy Taylor, on standup bass - a wonderful addition for this incredible duo.

When asked why people appreciate their music, Gary said: "We have a good time every time we play and we hope that rubs off on the audience. We have five CDs (now 10) between us of original and obscure music ranging from folk, blues, bluegrass, country to jazz, so there is something for everyone.” The duo’s the most recent CD “Things Have Changed”, released in 2016, shows off their style with an acoustic collection of originals, covers, and parodies spanning bluegrass, country, and folk.

T.C. feels that house concerts like Pink House are the wave of the future for acoustic musicians.  "They will be the saving grace of live music," she says. "It's the best experience for the listener, it's best for the musicians and they are so easy to put on.” Of course, we’d have to agree with that (except maybe the “so easy” part)!

We have seen Smythe and Taylor several times at the annual High Peaks Music Festival in Westcliffe, and we have loved them every time.  Come to this great concert, and become the next Smythe and Taylor fan!
